While the church in North Africa is currently small, it wasn’t always that way: for 400-500 years of the church’s early history, North Africa was a major center of Christianity. A number of important church leaders, including Tertullian, Cyprian and especially Augustine came from North Africa.
“And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him.” (Acts 17:26–27)
Lord, you work out all things according to your perfect will for your glory and the salvation of your people. You chose many North Africans to be yours during the early centuries of the church; thank you for your work in their lives and the heritage we’ve received from them.
“Our fathers, when they were in Egypt, did not consider your wondrous works; they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love, but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.” (Ps 106:7)
Lord, we so easily forget what you’ve done. Forgive us. May we remember your steadfast love and your amazing deeds.
“Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.” (Ps 107:1–3)
Thank you, Father, for the great things you have done in our lives and throughout history. You have been gathering in your people from all over the world so that they will be for the praise of your name. Please continue your saving work!
“The holy seed is its stump.” (Isa 6:13)
Father, only a stump remains from the once thriving North African church. But that tree is growing once again. Let it continue to grow as it is rooted in your word. Let your word bear fruit throughout North Africa so that your church is built up for your glory.
